A diary is where you write about your day and what you were thinking. It is not written to be shown to other people.
This page explains how far, and to whom, the diary entries you write in LangJournal are visible.
By Default, Only You Can Read Them
Your diary entries, their corrections, and your AI chats are restricted so that they can only be read from your own account. Read access is limited to the owner at the database level, so other users cannot read them by guessing IDs or by listing records.
Photos, videos, and audio attached to a diary entry have the same restriction. No one but you can read them.
Your entries become visible to others only when you choose to make them so.
Share Links
You can create a share link for an individual diary entry. Anyone who knows the link can view that entry.
If you do not create a link, no sharing happens. You can also stop sharing after creating one.
Teams
A team is a shared space for encouraging each other. Please use it on the understanding that what you post there will be read by others.
Teams work differently from your diary. Diary entries are private by default, whereas a team post is something you write in order to share it. If there is something you would rather no one else knew, write it in your diary instead of in a team.
Please also note that content posted to a team may be reviewed by us when responding to reports or checking for rule violations.
How Your Data Is Handled for AI Corrections
To produce corrections and comments, your diary text is sent to AI service providers such as OpenAI. This is necessary for the AI to correct your writing.
The data we send is not used by those providers to train their AI models. For details, see our Privacy Policy.
We also never use your diary content for advertising, and never provide or sell personally identifiable information to third parties.
What the AI Remembers (Memory)
To tailor comments and conversations to you, the AI assistant remembers what you write in your diaries and AI chats as "memory".
You can review your memory at any time in the app's settings, turn remembering off, and delete items individually or all at once. Memory has no expiration date and is kept until you delete it.
What Happens When You Delete Your Account
When you delete your account, all of your data is deleted, including your diary entries, corrections, AI chats, and memory. This cannot be undone.
You can do this from [Settings] → [Delete account] in the app.
What This Looks Like From Our Side
Finally, here is how things look from the side of the people running the service.
Our internal admin tools include no screen that displays the text or title of a diary entry. They show only information such as the date and whether a correction has finished. The database we use for aggregate analysis also has diary text removed from it. Access to the database is logged.
That said, we cannot claim that it is "technically impossible for us to read". That would require end-to-end encryption, where content is only ever decrypted on your device, but the AI needs to be able to work with your text on the server in order to correct it. That feature and that approach cannot coexist.
We would rather not describe something as impossible when it is not, so the accurate statement is this: we have built things so that we do not read your diary, and we keep a record of database access. But we have not made it technically impossible.
